A half day workshop on the overview of the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) was held on 30 September 2023, at the Wavelink Maritime Institute.

Organised by SMOU, the “Understanding STCW at a Glance” workshop provided some 23 attendees with valuable insights into the STCW Convention, its evolution, and its connection to international maritime regulations.

The speaker Capt Joe Chen delivered an engaging presentation covering essential topics, including the chapters of the STCW Convention and the Code; significance of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS); the role of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in regulating maritime issues; the importance of maintaining a safe shipping environment and preserving our oceans; establishing competence and professionalism standards for onboard crew members; and the wide-ranging applicability of STCW provisions. The workshop also covered the background of STCW Convention, how it has evolved over the years with highlights on the key amendments.

The workshop equipped maritime professionals with a broader understanding of the regulatory landscape governing the maritime industry. Participants left the workshop with a firm understanding of STCW, which is to keep the world’s seas and ships safe for all, including ship crew and the environment.
