On 28 August and 17 September, Young SMOU (YSMOU) engaged more than 40 cadets from the Diploma in Marine Engineering (DMR) and Diploma in Nautical Studies (DNS) programmes at the Singapore Maritime Academy (SMA).
During the pre-departure briefing with the DMR cadets, SMA lecturers Ms Siti Syafiqah and Mr Liew Hong Lin highlighted essential preparations for their first ship deployment.
YSMOU Manager Sherry Tan then introduced SMOU’s role in safeguarding seafarers’ welfare through collective bargaining agreements, assistance during the COVID-19 pandemic, support for unpaid wage cases, workplace accident compensation, and more. She also introduced YSMOU activities such as networking events, development and mentoring workshops, and volunteering opportunities.
SMA alumni also spoke about their seafaring journeys and experiences as cadets. The session concluded with a Q&A segment where cadets and parents raised their concerns and sought advice for their first deployment.
The following month, SMA Director Capt. Chatur Wahyu welcomed the DNS cadets, where he emphasized the importance of embracing diversity.
YSMOU Representative Angel Lee and YSMOU Committee Member and Chief Officer Justin Lim then gave a union awareness talk, highlighting how SMOU membership provides career support for our seafarers through maritime courses, networking opportunities, and even helping them with workplace grievances.
This was followed by a series of industry talks and alumni sharings. Both sessions concluded with cadets and families gaining a clearer understanding of SMOU’s role in protecting and empowering seafarers.
SMOU remains committed to building a strong foundation for the next generation of maritime professionals, ensuring every member receives the support needed throughout their seafaring journey.
