On 19 March 2025, a group of Young SMOU (YSMOU) members spent a day gaining valuable insights into both the operational and interpersonal sides of the maritime industry. The learning journey combined a behind-the-scenes look at Singapore’s port operations with a hands-on workshop on negotiation—two skill sets that are increasingly relevant to today’s maritime professionals.
The learning journey began with a visit to the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore’s (MPA) Port Operations Control Centre (POCC), where the youth were introduced to the inner workings of vessel traffic management. Through a sharing session by MPA, participants learned how the Vessel Traffic Information System (VTIS) supports safe and efficient navigation in Singapore’s port waters and the busy Singapore Strait.
The visit continued with a tour of the POCC’s viewing gallery, led by Capt. Scott Ngiam, Senior Marine Manager (Vessel Traffic Management), where participants observed the operations team in real time. Mr Hamizan Mohamad Sabar, Watch Supervisor, also shared insights into the day-to-day responsibilities of a Vessel Traffic Operator and how close coordination, vigilance, and communication are key to managing one of the world’s busiest maritime routes.
After a meaningful discussion with the POCC team, the focus shifted in the evening to a different kind of skill—negotiation. Held at NTUC Club @ SingPost, the workshop titled “Negotiating Fundamentals: Achieving Win-Win Agreements” was facilitated by trainer Ms Kit Teng, who introduced participants to key negotiation concepts such as integrative vs. distributive approaches, preparation techniques, and the importance of understanding both your own interests and those of the other party.
Participants also took part in interactive role-play exercises that allowed them to put theory into practice. From resolving disagreements to working through mock negotiations, the session helped them develop greater confidence in navigating real-life situations where clear communication and problem-solving are essential.
The one-day programme gave YSMOU members a broader view of the maritime ecosystem—from how the POCC operates on a daily basis to how professionals can work towards constructive outcomes through effective negotiation. It was a timely reminder that strong technical knowledge and interpersonal skills go hand in hand in building a well-rounded maritime career.
